On Brand: School of Creative Arts Third Year Painters: Curated by Jaclyn Meloche

On Brand is a group exhibition that explores the last century of abstract painting. Dancing between geometric abstraction, linear abstraction, lyrical abstraction, colour field painting, and abstract expressionism, the paintings in this exhibition reveal new ways through which to contemplate colour, composition, form, and scale as meaningful content within the frame. Whether navigating the lines between commentary, emotion, gesture, and/or narrative, the artists have each embraced this new language—abstraction—as formal and experiential methods for autobiography, storytelling, commentary, and advocacy.

In the context of a third-year painting class at the University of Windsor, artists were tasked with contemplating formal deconstructions of the picture plane, expansive scale, and new approaches to translating content via the emotional and experiential. The result of this venture into abstraction is a spatial symphony of forms, patterns, textures, and signature colour palettes that are on brand for a generation of emerging painters in Windsor-Essex.
