Event Details
Informed by a late Modern interpretation of abstraction, my current practice typically moves between painterly and post-painterly interpretations of cultural history and biomorphic forms. The age and patina of old walls, scraps of manuscripts, natural forms, etc. provide sources for the textures and compositions I use in my work. Whatever the source, I attempt to balance the pre-planned with the immediacy of the painting process itself, so that the images created are able to convey universal themes as well as to allow for variations in interpretation.
Much of my current work is predicated on a tacit acknowledgment that in the current context, landscape/the organic does not exist separately from the artifacts and vestiges of cultural history. To garden, for instance, is most often to make decisions about what to cultivate and what to leave out within a structure – what ‘belongs’ and what does not. Added to this in our time are all the remnants and consequences of the built environment which surround us, and which affect us in everything from the climate crisis to pollutants to urban sprawl. At present, my work often comes out of a consideration of these inter-related factors that are part of contemporary life.

Reception: Saturday, January 10 2026 from 1-3pm
Different media and surfaces call up fresh responses in me. The immediacy of soft pastel captures the quick emotion (with nuances) while acrylic and collage are slower and open to finding new directions. Oil is more thoughtful and demanding. I use thin layers of colour over shape and line to move past realism to disrupted space and form. There should be room for differing perceptions and interpretations, something more nebulous than fact. To finish, I like to reinforce with strong line.
In sum, my goal is illusion coupled with reality, an obvious surface with an underlying truth, all salted with some irony and humour.

In “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” Maxwell Johnson explores the landscapes of the subconscious through surreal encounters and emotional symbolism. His paintings blend mythic creatures, prism-like light, and simplified human forms that hover between playfulness and revelation. Each scene unfolds like a dream — part cosmic, part psychological — where the boundaries between past and present, memory and myth, dissolve.
Johnson’s bold use of color and form transforms internal experience into tangible space, inviting viewers to recognize their own inner narratives reflected in the surreal. These works are not just visions, but self-portraits of the mind — meditations on wonder, fear, and the strange beauty of being alive.
