28th ANNUAL: JURIED STUDENT ART SHOW

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Leamington and the Kiwanis Club, the Leamington Arts Centre presents the 28th annual Juried Student Art Show.

Eligibility:

This exhibition is open to all grade 11 and 12 Essex County secondary students only  (grades 9 and 10 students not eligible.)

Late submissions or artwork NOT properly prepared according to the guidelines will NOT be included in the exhibtion or eligible for prizes.

Eight (8) Categories:

1. Painting (Acrylic, Oil, Watercolour, etc.)

2. Drawing (Pencil, Charcoal, Pastel, Ink, etc.)

3. Sculpture/3D (Clay, Found Objects, etc.)

4. Photography (Analogue, Digital)

5. Mixed Media (Assemblage, Collage, Textiles, etc.)

6. Printmaking (Intaglio, Lithography, Linocut, Engraving, etc.)

7. Video/Filmmaking (Animation, Experimental, etc.)

8. New Media Art (Graphic Design, Digital Illustration, etc.).

Limitations:

  • MAXIMUM of TWO (2) ENTRIES to the Show PER STUDENT.
    • Students may submit two (2) works in the same category, or in two (2) different categories, but not more than two (2) works in total per student to the show are permitted.
  • Other media and forms of artwork not listed in the categories, are not accepted and will be disqualified if submitted.
  • Minimum Size of 8x10"
  • Maximum Size of 36x48" for 2D artwork (including foam core/Bristol board matting.)

Fee: 

There are NO FEES to participate. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Rotary Club of Leamington and the Kiwanis Club.

Jurying:

ALL on time artwork submitted following the preparation guidelines will be displayed in the exhibition. 

The judging panel will base decisions on:

  • Aesthetics/Visual Impact, is it appealing,  visually striking, does it catch the attention viewers and hold their attention.
  • Creativity/Originality, demonstration of artistic voice, originality, and imagination;
  • Skill/Technique, craftsmanship, including quality, technique, and skill in chosen medium; attention to detail; and accuracy in communicating issues;
  • Overall Presentation, if the below criteria for presentation is followed, artwork is properly mounted and displayed, labeled and cleanly prepared.

Awards & Prizes:

$2,220 TOTAL!

The following prize will be awarded in EACH of the eight (8) categories:

  • 1st Place - $100 & Certificate
  • 2nd Place - $80 & Certificate
  • 3rd Place - $60 & Certificate
  • Honourable Mention(s) - Certificate

The following prizes will be be awarded to only 1 (one) student:

  • People’s Choice Award - $100 & Certificate
    • Visitors will have the opportunity to cast a single vote for their favorite work. Votes will be tallied at the end of the show to determine one winner.
  • Future Artist Award - $200 & Certificate
    • In honour of the late Marg and Don Ross, this award is granted to a graduating student who showcases the most potential as an artist or enthusiast and whom has demonstrated extraordinary support and patronage to the arts in the community. For those who choose to submit, students must write a 500-word statement on their current involvement in the arts and describe their artistic goals for the future. Judging will be based on the statement and artwork submitted and one winner selected.

Schedule:

Entry Deadline: Thursday, April 23, 5pm (SHARP! NO EXCEPTIONS!)

Exhibition Opens: Saturday, April 25, 11am

Awards Presentation & Reception: Friday, May 1, 6pm

Exhibition Closes: Thursday, June 18

Artwork Pick Up: Friday, June 19 - Saturday, June 27

NO PICK UP BEFORE JUNE 18 as the exhibition will still be on display. ALL ARTWORK MUST BE PICKED UP BEFORE JUNE 27. The LAC will not be responsible for storage of artwork not collected.

Artwork Preparation

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ & FOLLOW!!

ARTWORK THAT IS NOT PREPARED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING WILL NOT BE DISPLAYED IN THE EXHBIT AND WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS. 

ALL ARTWORK MUST BE LABELLED ON FRONT LOWER RIGHT CORNER MATCHING THE ONLINE SUBMISSION FORM EXACTLY. Title of Artwork, Student Name, School, and Category (not the media). Label template available HERE. This will be seen by the gallery visitors and the public.

FRAMED ARTWORK MUST BE WIRED ON THE BACK. ALLIGATOR/TEETH HOOKS OR OTHER HARDWARE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

ARTWORK MEDIUM MUST FIT THE APPROPRIATE CATEGORY. Artwork that does not fit within one of the categories is not eligible and will be excluded by the jury if submitted.

PAPER: ALL 2D artwork on paper MUST be mounted on Black Form Core or Bristol Board ONLY with a bulldog clip at top.  NO LOOSE PAPER WORKS. This included photography and digital media/illustrations.

STRETCHED CANVASMUST BE WIRED on the back from side to side securely with screws, not tape or glue. Saw-Tooth Hooks/Alligator Hooks, other types of hardware or works with no hardware at all will NOT be displayed.

CANVAS BOARDS: DO NOT need any hanging hardware, ONLY a bulldog clip(s) at top.

3D & SCULPTURE: Free-standing works MUST be assembled and stable/balanced.

PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL: MUST  be printed. ALL 2D artwork on paper MUST be mounted on Black Form Core or Bristol Board ONLY with a bulldog clip at top.  NO LOOSE PAPER WORKS.

VIDEO & FILM:  MUST be in MP4 format ONLY and uploaded using this form below. USB thumb-drives will NOT be accepted.  Films/Videos will be displayed/presented on a large TV screen with audio.

FIXATIVE: Heavy pencil, charcoal, pastel or other material that may smear should be treated with an art fixative prior to submission. Such pieces should also have a protective overlay.
