Exploring Famous Artists and Styles of Painting
In this series of classes, adult students will explore the work of 8 famous artists and will produce works of art based on the influences, styles and techniques of well-known artists. Students will use a variety of art media. Classes will be on Monday evenings from 6 to 8 pm The cost is $40 per class with all materials provided.
September 11th
Norval Morriseau (March 14, 1932 – December 4, 2007)
Norval Morrisseau was an Indigenous Canadian artist who created works depicting the legends of his people. His style is characterized by thick black outlines and bright colors. He is referred to as “The Picasso of the North”.
September 25th
Henri Rousseau (May 21, 1844 – September 2 1910)
Henri Julien Félix Rousseau was a self-taught, French post-impressionist painter. He left his tax collector employment to become a full-time painter at the age of 49. Some of his most famous paintings have a jungle theme.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944)
Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works known in Western art history. A considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian. Her paintings, which sometimes resemble diagrams, were a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas.

Marc Chagall (July 6, 1887 – March 28, 1985)
Marc Chagall was a Russian-French artist. Although he borrowed elements from Cubism, Impressionism, and Fauvism, Chagall developed a style that cannot be classified with any artistic movement of his time. His images based on emotional and poetic associations, rather than on rules of pictorial logic

Piet Mondrian is a Dutch artist best known for his abstract paintings. Art that is abstract does not show things that are recognisable such as people, objects or landscapes. Instead artists use colours, shapes and textures to achieve their effect.

Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869- November 3, 1954)
Henri Matisse was a French, Fauvist visual artist of the 20th century who developed a rigorous painting style. His works emphasized flattened forms, decorative patterns and bright colours.

Paul Klee (December 18, 1879 – June 29, 1940)
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory,

Lawren Harris (October 23, 1885 -January 29, 1970)
Canadian artist, Lawren Harris, was a leading member of The Group of Seven. His most recognisable works are those of snow-capped mountains and blue skies.
