PERMANENT COLLECTION
Artifact of the Week:

Untitled, Karel Appel
Lithograph, 1969, 28"x32"

Karel Appel was born April 25, 1921, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and was an influential Dutch painter. His works focus on figurative abstractions employed expressive colours and forms. A large inspiration for his works came from the artwork of children and the rejection of sophisticated aesthetic tastes. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

His first solo exhibition was a product of experimentation with a primitive approach to describing subject matter reminiscent of folk art. In 1948, he formed a group called the CoBrA group with artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. This group was united in their rejection of rationalism and geometric abstraction. The group separated in 1952, so Appel joined another collection of abstraction artists called Art Informel.
