The SEAA/LAC’s collection is of great pride amongst its staff, members, and constituents. We take seriously our mission to enrich culture through the collection and preservation of art. Since its founding in 1971, the SEAA/LAC has acquired hundreds of works of art, collecting in the areas of Canadian and international historical and contemporary art.The collection has been built both through donated gifts and considered purchases. Approximately 90% of Gallery acquisitions come from private donors—often dedicated collectors looking for a permanent home for their works where they will be appreciated, cared for, and put on display for others to enjoy.  It is because of the generosity of these donors that the SEAA/LAC enjoys the position it holds as a collecting institution.

This exhibit features works collected primarily in 2020-2021.

A NEW BEGINNING: Rosalyn Raymont

Reception: Cancelled due to COVID-19

In January 2021, as the world greeted a new year amid the pandemic, I was fortunate to find a door that opened a new chapter in my life’s story.

Having worked for 20 years in a different field, I decided to seize the moment and return to my true passion for painting. Specifically, I chose to explore the creative canvas of abstract painting.

For this collection, each painting has been selected for its representation of a new beginning. These pieces are bold explorations of design, technique, and colour.

My process incorporates acrylic paint and mixed media, along with the use of large brushes and different tools, to create evocative compositions and textures.

With these pieces, I drew inspiration from the creative process itself. Indeed, I found that I possess an intrinsic need and drive to create, and I am genuinely grateful that I am able to do so.

Constantly looking at the world to envision and capture my next painting, I want my pieces to convey meaningful emotions and sensations for anyone who views them. I see my art as a journey that begins with me but continues and evolves with the viewer long after the final brushstroke.

Ultimately, the purpose of this collection is to offer a rich and engaging chronicle of my new beginning and how I have developed my identity as an artist.

March 2 - March 27

GRAYDON DYCK: from the LAC collection

Reception: Fri May 6, 7-9pm (*Due to COVID-19,  a capacity limit of 50% will be in effect. Masks are not mandatory but appreciated for our higher risk visitors and for the safety of our staff.)

George Graydon Dyck was born in Leamington on September 15, 1946 and died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 19, 2011. Graydon was an artist whose work was shown in Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and Winnipeg. He is best known for painting vintage cars and movie stars. Graydon’s artistic skills were evident from a very young age and in 1967, he moved to Winnipeg to attend the School of Fine Art at the University of Manitoba. It was there that he met the love of his life Judith (nee Wolinsky). They explored many art scenes over the years, living in Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and Winnipeg.

Over his 45 year career, he did thousands of paintings and created hundreds of car and figure movement sculptures. His paintings are in many private and public collections across Canada and the U.S. In 1984, he was commissioned to paint a mural of nudes and figure movements in the women’s powder room of the famous Limelight Nightclub in New York. He was known for being a painter of Cars and Stars and had many a muse, namely 1940s American cars and a fine group of ladies, including Diana Ross, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Tallulah Bankhead, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. He also painted many others, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Winston Churchill and Golda Meir. Graydon loved music, especially Motown and saw many of the greats perform in Detroit and Chicago in his teenage years.

This exhibition made possible through the generous gift of Bob Ceh.

June 1 - June 26

TRACES: University of Windsor School of Creative Arts MFA Group Show

Reception: Fri June 17, 5-10pm  (in conjunction with the Mill St Market)

Leamington Arts Centre (LAC) is proud to announce the opening of the new exhibition Traces, on view from June 1st – June 26th, 2022. This exhibition made possible by the sponsorship from RBC Bank and through the efforts of the University of Windsor staff and faculty.

Traces is a student exhibition, featuring the multidisciplinary works of graduate students in the 2022 MFA Program at the University of Windsor’s School of Creative Arts (SoCA): Nate Talbot, Jules Pietras, Daniela González, Lyndsay McKay, Nathalie Dubois Calero and Steve Rose.

Throughout the exhibit, the artist’s works are anchored through their particular ability to describe and convey a sense of “trace”. Whether referring to an indexical relationship with the subject represented, or referencing an identifiable location, or one that is conceptual and abstract, the artists hand over the highest value to the exploration of material, including its own sense of time and place, interactions, agencies, and histories. The collection encourages the viewer to contemplate – or decipher – the context in which ideas of “trace” extend to one another, connecting through themes of death, loss and absence, magic, sustainability, domesticity, immemorial conversation, and recollection.

The opening reception for Traces will take place on Friday, June 17th from 5pm – 10pm in conjunction with our Mill St. Market in uptown Leamington.

ART ALIVE!: Don Waffle

Reception: Fri June 17, 5-10pm  (in conjunction with the Mill St Market)

Don Waffle’s strikingly realistic art brings people to life, in portraits and in their activities. These range from a toddler stretching high to barely reach the keys of the piano; to a party setting out on a winter sleighride; to a smiling lass pouring a glass from the Guinness tap at the Spitfire Arms Alehouse in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

This unique exhibit extends to include a replica scale model created by the artist, of the MARK IX Spitfire flown by F/L Gerry Billing in WW2

His paintings range from abstract, black & white, to spiritual and visionary works. At the core he believes that we all have the capacity to heal and transform ourselves after walking through the darkness. He hopes his works may reflect that and even give healing and comfort to those who still walk there.

Z’otz* Collective: Community Collaboration

Reception: Fri Aug 19, 5-10pm (in conjunction with the Mill St Market)

Z’otz* Collective was formed in Toronto in 2004 by three artists of Latin American heritage; Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, and Ilyana Martínez. In a shared studio, they meet weekly to collaborate on works that incorporate drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and site-specific installation. Their work connects to the storytelling traditions of their Latin American culture. Through the wording of their titles, the Collective gives hints to the narratives contained within their works, while leaving space for viewers to create their own conclusions. The direct approach of drawing, their primary means of expression, enables them to create quirky subjects and hybrid creatures. They use humour and play to examine the immigrant experiences of displacement, transition and transformation. Z’otz* Collective has shown work at multiple galleries and museums across Canada.

LIFE’S LETTER: Carly Verheyen

Reception: Fri July 8, 7-9pm

110 love letters from 1946 return to the original building they passed through, the former Leamington Post Office, just after WWII. The letters tell the history of a transatlantic love story between a Canadian Solider Nick and a British war bride Rene.

Through Rene’s cursive, the love and longing truly display how remarkable the 48,000 war brides were, leaving behind their loved ones, beloved home country and life as they knew it to follow love across an ocean.

This exhibit will take you back in time to when communication and connection were vastly different than they are today and invite you to consider what connection means to you.

Life’s Letter inspires the need to dip into the cherished past to better understand the present and reminds us that in times of uncertainty, connection, courage, and hope fuel the quest for love and adventure.

Carly Butler Verheyen is a writer and photographer born and raised in Leamington Ontario. What began as a journey of retracing the steps of her grandmother in 2013 turned into a blog, a book, and calling. Her book Life’s Letter was published in 2021. Currently, she lives in British Columbia with her husband Adam and 3 children.

SPIRITUAL REVELATIONS: Pavlo Lopata

Reception: Fri Aug 19, 5-10pm  (in conjunction with the Mill St Market)

Various life and artistic preferences influenced the artist’s interest in pursuing surrealism and symbolic themes. His surrealist art is a journey of discovery and reflection on the deep symbolism of objects such as an egg, a candle, bells, the cross and hands. The hands of God are a repeating theme in many works. The artist’s creative foundation rests on themes which embody God’s world, religion, native Ukrainian roots, the tragic history of Ukraine and the family unit. The juxtaposition of surrealism and symbolism are the artist’s concrete manifestation of the internal dynamic of human reason and imagination.
