In Flux features the work of MFA students Emma Feliciano, Daniela Gaie and Niku Koochak. This group show explores themes of personal, societal and displacement-related changes through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches. The artists use vibrant colours, abstraction of text and repetitive patterns to represent their feelings of ephemerality and constant change.
Feliciano’s Words of Wisdom series prompts change and reflection on the language that is used when discussing mental health issues. Each acrylic gouache painting depicts a commonplace phrase that is often said to pacify someone during a mental health crisis instead of listening to them. The artist uses text-based art so that these phrases can no longer be ignored or seen as the solutions to mental health crises.
Gaie’s Reproduction explores the transformative journey from pregnancy to motherhood. It is committed to inclusivity and collaborative practices, as the pieces were made collectively by family members. Organic lines, colours, and wool, reflective of the artist’s Colombian heritage, serve as tangible symbols for body fluids, roots, the alchemical dance of natural processes, and the creation of a family fabric.
Koochak’s Blots, again Blots, again Blots deals with themes of interpersonal changes and displacement through abstract paintings and painting performances. This project is an exploration of the variations of identity influenced by the artist’s experiences in a multifaceted society and considering the change of self from one environment to another, trying to communicate with other individuals while experiencing displacement, and motivated by the contradictions that exist in a society with ongoing constant change.
